Here&#8217;s when to worry about a headache.<\/p>\n<p><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/about-this-site\/meet-our-medical-editors\">By Mayo Clinic Staff<\/a><\/div>\n<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>Most headaches are minor, and you can treat them with a pain reliever. Some headaches, however, signal a dangerous or serious medical condition. Don&#8217;t ignore headaches that aren&#8217;t explained or headaches that steadily worsen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When to seek emergency help<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Get immediate medical attention<\/strong> if your headache:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develops suddenly and is very painful.<\/li>\n<li>Lasts for several days.<\/li>\n<li>Causes mental confusion or loss of consciousness.<\/li>\n<li>Happens with seizures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Immediate medical attention<\/strong> also is needed if your headache occurs with new:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dizziness or loss of balance.<\/li>\n<li>Weakness or not being able to move part of the body, such as the arms or legs.<\/li>\n<li>Numbness.<\/li>\n<li>Trouble speaking or understanding speech.<\/li>\n<li>Reddened eye or droopy eyelid.<\/li>\n<li>Fever, stiff neck or rash.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Also seek medical attention<\/strong> if your headache:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Happens with changes in vision, such as blurring or seeing halos around lights.<\/li>\n<li>Is serious and follows a recent sore throat or respiratory infection.<\/li>\n<li>Begins or worsens after a head injury, fall or bump.<\/li>\n<li>Is triggered by changing the position of your head, coughing, sneezing, bending or physical activity.<\/li>\n<li>Is a different type of headache from your usual type and you&#8217;re older than 50.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Treatment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While you wait for medical attention, taking these steps may help your headache:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take a pain reliever, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others), naproxen sodium (Aleve) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others).<\/li>\n<li>Drink fluids.<\/li>\n<li>Drink a beverage with caffeine, such as coffee, tea or soda.<\/li>\n<li>Try to avoid bright light if it makes your headache worse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--googleoff: all--><\/p>\n<p><!--googleon: all--><\/p>\n<p><!--googleoff: snippet--><\/p>\n<menu class=\"social\"\/>\n<p>    <span class=\"moddate\">Jan. 29, 2025<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"expandable references\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"acces-show-hide\" data-show=\"Show references\" data-hide=\"Hide references\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"dvReferenceListPC\">Show references<\/button><\/p>\n<div id=\"dvReferenceListPC\">\n<ol>\n<li>Walls RM, et al., eds.
