People would often compliment my joy, and while it was nice to hear, it also made me extra upset with myself when I wasn’t feeling that way. I carried this unspoken pressure to always maintain a cheerful exterior, even when I was struggling with frustration or sadness.

But as I grew, I realized that true joy isn’t about being happy all the time. Joy is deeper.

Joy is a mindset that we form by making intentional choices.

And while I by no means have this mastered (believe me, I definitely still have low moments), I’ve learned that joyful women tend to embrace certain habits and mindsets. These practices have helped me live a more enriched, purposeful life, and I believe they can do the same for you. Here are seven things joyful women do to cultivate lasting joy:

1. They Live in the Present Moment

Joyful women understand the importance of being present. They don’t dwell on the past or constantly worry about the future. Instead, they embrace the now—whether it’s savoring a quiet cup of coffee in the morning, enjoying a conversation with a friend, or taking in the beauty of nature. Living in the present helps reduce stress and anxiety, allowing them to fully appreciate the blessings of each moment.

The Bible reminds us of the importance of living in the present in Matthew 6:34, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” When we focus on today, we free ourselves from unnecessary burdens and open ourselves to experiencing God’s peace in the moment.

2. They Are Active

Joyful women make movement a priority. Whether it’s through exercise, walking, or just getting up from their desks throughout the work day, they understand that being physically active is essential for both mental and physical health. Not only does it help with stress relief, but it also boosts energy, enhances mood, and supports overall health.

Taking time to move your body is a form of self-care, and joyful women look at being active as a “get to” rather than a “have to”. A walk with a friend, playing with the kids, or doing an online workout class are all ways to stay active and nourish the body.

3. They Uplift Others

Joyful women are kind, generous, and encouraging. They actively seek out opportunities to lift others up, whether it’s with a kind word, a thoughtful gesture, or simply offering support. By focusing on others and their well-being, joyful women cultivate a positive environment and deepen their sense of purpose. Tearing other women down is often a key indicator that joy is lacking in your life. When we find ourselves criticizing or belittling others, it often always stems from a place of insecurity or unhappiness within ourselves. If we aren’t grounded in joy, it becomes easy to project our own pain onto others by diminishing their worth.

The Bible encourages us in Philippians 2:3-4, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Joyful women understand their worth through the lens of God’s love, enabling them to show grace and kindness to others, rather than feeling the need to diminish their value.

4. They Use Their Time Wisely

Time is one of the most precious resources we have, and joyful women understand the importance of using it wisely. They focus on what truly matters—spending quality time with loved ones, pursuing passions, or growing personally and professionally. Instead of getting lost in distractions, they intentionally make time for the things that align with their values and purpose.

Ephesians 5:15-16 says, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” Joyful women take this advice to heart, recognizing that each moment is an opportunity to grow and contribute to the world around them.

5. They Eat Clean

Eating well is not about restriction or following a fad diet; it’s about nourishing the body with wholesome, nutrient-dense foods. Joyful women make healthy eating a priority, not just for their bodies, but for their minds and spirits too. Clean, whole foods provide the energy and nutrition needed for a vibrant, active life.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” Joyful women see their eating habits as a way to honor the life God has given them.

6. They Smile and Laugh

Laughter and smiling are contagious, and joyful women embrace this! They understand the power of a good laugh and a bright smile to lift their spirits and those around them. Humor brings lightness to life and helps them navigate challenges with grace and positivity.

As Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Laughter is a form of healing, and joyful women know that finding joy in the little things can make life more enjoyable and fulfilling.

7. They Embrace the Gospel

Above all, joyful women understand that their ultimate joy comes from their relationship with Christ. They embrace the gospel, knowing that it brings purpose, hope, and an eternal perspective. The gospel reminds them of their worth, their calling, and the love God has for them. This foundation of faith allows them to approach life’s ups and downs with grace and peace.

John 15:11 says, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” The joy found in the gospel transcends circumstances and is the ultimate source of lasting happiness for women who follow Christ.

If you leave this page with one takeaway, let it be this:

Joy is so much more than an emotion. It’s a way of life!

So, what’s one thing you can do today to bring more joy into your life? Start small, and watch how these intentional habits begin to transform your heart and mind.

Abbey holds a degree in journalism from Indiana University.
