However, going overboard can have consequences for your health. Before you open that box, here are seven facts you should know about Valentine\u2019s Day chocolates.<\/p>\n<h2>1. The Serving Size of a Chocolate Box Is About Two Pieces<\/h2>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-178908\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/03122433\/facts-about-chocolate-600-serving-size.jpg\" alt=\"carton of chocolates | Facts About Chocolate\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Yes, that\u2019s right, the standard serving size for a Valentine\u2019s chocolate box is less than you might think: just two pieces, or around 30 to 40 grams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-eating-sugar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">limit your intake<\/a> of added sugars to no more than 10 percent of your total calories, per the most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/resources\/2020-2025-dietary-guidelines-online-materials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dietary Guidelines for Americans<\/a>,\u201d says Amy Gorin, MS, RDN, and owner of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amydgorin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amy Gorin Nutrition<\/a>\u00a0in the New York City area.<\/p>\n<p>(Keep in mind we\u2019re talking about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/natural-sugar-vs-added-sugar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>added<\/em>\u00a0sugars<\/a> here, not naturally occurring sugars found in, say, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/is-the-sugar-in-fruit-bad-for-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an apple<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you eat a 2,000-calorie diet, she says, you should aim to consume no more than 200 calories of added sugar a day. That\u2019s the equivalent of 50 grams. However, \u201cThe American Heart Association has stricter guidelines,\u201d says Jennifer Glockner, RDN and creator of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/smarteeplate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smartee Plate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The AHA says that\u00a0added sugars should make up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/sugar\/added-sugars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no more than half<\/a> of your discretionary calories, which are the calories left over after you meet your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/essential-nutrients-explainer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">daily nutrient requirements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For most American women, that equals about 100 calories a day from added sugars, respectively, or about one ounce (or 28 grams) of chocolate a day.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that\u00a0added sugars aren\u2019t just in sweets, though. They\u2019re also in foods like salad dressing and white bread \u2014 it\u2019s always important to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/nutrition-facts-label-food-label\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read your labels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Chocolate Contains Antioxidant-Like Compounds<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve heard chocolate is healthy, you\u2019re not totally wrong. Chocolate \u2014 more specifically cocoa \u2014 contains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/antioxidants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antioxidant-like compounds<\/a> that can help mitigate the damage to cells caused by free radicals in the body.<\/p>\n<p>Research suggests flavonoids\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5465813\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have anti-oxidative properties<\/a>, and the flavonoids and flavanols specifically found in dark chocolate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5465250\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">may have health benefits<\/a>, says Glockner.<\/p>\n<p>That said, eating dark chocolate doesn\u2019t automatically improve your health. \u201cIn order to get the full benefits of flavanols,\u201d Glockner says, \u201cyou may need to consume a large quantity of chocolate, which means also increasing your sugar and calorie intake.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>3. Dark Chocolate Contains Less Sugar Than Milk Chocolate<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-178907\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/03122426\/facts-about-chocolate-600-milk-and-dark-chocolate.jpg\" alt=\"mix of dark and milk chocolate | Facts About Chocolate\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cChocolate is composed of cocoa beans, cocoa butter, and additives like sugar,\u201d says Glockner, but \u201cdark chocolate contains more cocoa beans and usually less sugar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, \u201cCocoa beans also have protein, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/dietary-fiber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiber<\/a>, and minerals such as iron and magnesium,\u201d Glockner says. \u201cSo the darker the chocolate,\u201d she adds, \u201cthe more health benefits you get.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So if you want minimal additives and\u00a0less sugar in your treats, look for chocolate that contains at least 70 percent cacao, Glockner says.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Chocolate Boxes Can Be Loaded With Additives<\/h2>\n<p>Valentine\u2019s Day chocolates, like most sweet treats, contain ingredients like added sugars and additives. Some added sugars are obvious, but others have more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/other-names-for-sugar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confusing names<\/a> you could overlook in the ingredient list:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Corn sweetener<\/li>\n<li>Corn syrup<\/li>\n<li>Dextrose<\/li>\n<li>Fructose<\/li>\n<li>Glucose<\/li>\n<li>High-fructose corn syrup<\/li>\n<li>Lactose<\/li>\n<li>Malt syrup<\/li>\n<li>Maltose<\/li>\n<li>Molasses<\/li>\n<li>Sucrose<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other types of added sugars include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/sugar-alcohols\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sugar alcohols<\/a> like sorbitol and maltitol, as well as artificial sweeteners like saccharine and aspartame.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Overdoing It Can Potentially Mess With Your Hormones<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-178906\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/03122420\/facts-about-chocolate-600-overdoing-it.jpg\" alt=\"woman biting chocolate bar | Facts About Chocolate\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Eating chocolate can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6471517\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">trigger the pleasure and reward centers<\/a>\u00a0in your brain, making you feel good, but it\u2019s a slippery slope.<\/p>\n<p>When your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/why-are-glucose-spikes-harmful\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blood sugar level spikes<\/a> from eating, say, half a box of chocolates in one sitting, your body releases insulin, Glockner says, which can then cause your blood sugar levels to dip within a few hours. That dip is what\u2019s known as an energy crash.<\/p>\n<p>When that happens, \u201cLow blood sugar levels may cause you to feel very hungry, shaky, jittery, fatigued, and sleepy, with a lack of concentration,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, Gorin adds, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/is-sugar-really-that-bad-for-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eating too much sugar<\/a>\u00a0can also increase your risk of weight gain, cavities, and other health issues. \u201cAlso, consuming calories from added sugars takes away space in your diet for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/nutrient-dense-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nutrient-dense foods<\/a>,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>To help maintain stable blood sugar levels and prevent crashes, Glockner recommends eating sugar at the end of your meal, along with some protein and fiber. This slows down the rate of sugar absorption, she says.<\/p>\n<h2>6. Some Chocolate Treats Are Healthier Than Others<\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s no one type of chocolate that\u2019s best for Valentine\u2019s Day \u2014 what you indulge in depends on your preferences and dietary needs.<\/p>\n<p>However, a quick rule of thumb is to look for dark chocolate that lists cocoa as the first ingredient, rather than sugar, Glockner says.<\/p>\n<p>Consider other types of chocolate treats, too, like dark chocolate bark with almonds or coconut flakes.
