A cleft palate is an opening or split in the roof of the mouth. This video will help you understand how a cleft palate forms during an embryo\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>A baby\u2019s nose, mouth, jaw and face begin to form early in pregnancy. Their formation starts with pieces called \u201cprocesses,\u201d which travel toward each other and fuse together. If the pieces don\u2019t fuse together fully, a cleft palate can occur. The cleft (split or opening) can vary in shape and size.
