But there\u2019s evidence that being cold can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/trends\/endocrinology-metabolism\/fulltext\/S1043-2760(14)00010-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">increase energy expenditure<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0so if you\u2019re planning to work out, there may be some benefit to taking it outdoors.<\/p>\n<p>And while you usually stop shivering pretty quickly during an outdoor workout, the act of warming up can burn calories, too. \u201cYour body does use a considerable amount of energy to warm and humidify the air you breathe when you exercise in the cold,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/nancyclarkrd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nancy Clark<\/a>, RD, CSSD, a sports nutritionist in the Boston area.<\/p>\n<p>And if your winter workout involves heavy equipment \u2014 like a parka, skis, or snow shoes \u2014 you\u2019ll also burn a few extra calories lugging that gear around, Clark adds.<\/p>\n<h2>2. And a study at the University of Essex found that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/es903183r?journalCode=esthag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">green exercise<\/a>\u201d \u2014 a.k.a. exercising in nature \u2014 can improve mood and self-esteem.<\/p>\n<p>So while it may be tempting to work out indoors where it\u2019s warm,\u00a0it\u2019s worth bundling up and\u00a0braving the frigid temps.<\/p>\n<h2>3. It Helps You Escape the Horde<\/h2>\n<p>During the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/healthy-new-years-resolutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new year, new me<\/a>\u201d season, you may find your usual gym or studio annoyingly overcrowded \u2014 but trails and greenways are typically <em data-redactor-tag=\"em\">less<\/em> crowded in the winter. (Especially since there are always those people who don\u2019t wipe down their equipment after using it.)<\/p>\n<p>A study in the <i data-redactor-tag=\"i\">Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine<\/i> found that 63 percent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16377973\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exercise equipment is contaminated with rhinovirus<\/a>, which is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rhinoviruses\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most common cause of colds<\/a>. Doesn\u2019t that make you want some fresh air?<\/p>\n<h2>5. It Just Feels Good<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s invigorating to exercise outside when the weather is brisk. Just make sure you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/cold-weather-running-gear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dressing the part<\/a>. Ideally, you\u2019ll want to wear:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An outer layer or shell made from a waterproof, windproof fabric like Gore-Tex to guard against wind and rain<\/li>\n<li>A middle layer of wool or fleece to act as insulation<\/li>\n<li>A synthetic base layer that wicks moisture away from your body, keeping you warm and dry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You should also take extra care with your extremities, which are most vulnerable to the effects of the cold. \u201cYou can get away with a lot of cold if your head and hands are covered,\u201d Holland says.<\/p>\n<p>Mittens are better than gloves at keeping your fingers toasty, and it may also help to invest in polypropylene socks and glove liners, which help warm the hands and feet by <a href=\"http:\/\/mss-nde.uoi.gr\/publications-pdf\/journal-papers\/Periodika%20Nektaria\/The%20Water%20Absorption%20Behaviour%20of%20All-Polypropylene%20Composites%20and%20its%20Effect%20on%20Mechanical%20Properties.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wicking moisture away<\/a> from them.<\/p>\n<h2>Cold Weather Workout Tips<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-177713\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/11111858\/exercising-in-cold-weather-600-tips.jpg\" alt=\"woman running in snow | Exercising in Cold Weather\" width=\"601\" height=\"401\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Feeling inspired to create an outdoor fitness regimen this winter?
