It was always something to be coy about\u2014the implication being that not only was it intrusive to ask, but that it\u2019s best not to put the woman in the uncomfortable situation where either she is might be judged \u2026 or might lie. Age was always the elephant in the room <em>but<\/em> as Bob Dylan said \u2026 \ud83c\udfb5 the times they are a\u2019changing \ud83c\udfb6 . <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More and more women are getting comfortable embracing and sharing their age with pride a<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">nd I think it\u2019s due in large part to the fact that women have begun to redefine what it means to age on our own terms. Whether it\u2019s through skincare routines, health regimens, or simply the choice to flaunt our silver strands (or not), modern women are moving beyond outdated stereotypes and now have the freedom to define our own narratives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How Turning 50 Used to Look<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I was a young girl, 50+ year old women always looked a specific way. I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve seen the memes about the Golden Girls, or remember from the show, Dorothy, Rose and Blanche were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/parade.com\/52981\/erinhill\/surprising-secrets-of-the-golden-girls-castmates-revealed\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women in their 50s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In this formative time in my girlhood when I was watching the show (I was 10 when it came out in 1985), they looked like my grandmothers and were active like my grandmothers but the reason it stands out so much now is that through today\u2019s lens they look much older.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m turning 50 in a few months, I can\u2019t help but think about what it must have been like during that time, and feeling like that was the embodiment of being in your 50s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How Turning 50 Has Changed<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, the portrayal of aging has certainly changed. 10 years ago <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/slideshow\/50-then-and-now-55776101\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Today Show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> put together a slideshow of being in your 50s \u201cthen and now\u201d that showed stark contrast, especially among the women. One notable celebrity featured was Courteney Cox alongside Aunt Bee from The Andy Griffith show. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview in 2013 in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyou.com\/entertainment\/courteney-cox-shes-one-of-us\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New You<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine Cox herself spoke about aging. The interviewer noted that there were a number of shows at the time where the main character was in her 40s or 50s (Cox was starring on the show <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1441109\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cougar Town<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to which Cox attributed that to, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I feel like no one really looks their age anymore.\u201d Further in the article, she talks about her fear of turning 50 and also her use of anti-aging products including injectables, which at the time was not often openly discussed, especially among celebrities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast forward to today\u2014certainly there will always be people who feel it\u2019s no one\u2019s business to know their age and they might even lie about it for fear it could jeopardize their careers, relationships, etc., but it\u2019s becoming more common that women are proudly saying their age and embracing it because more women are aging on their own terms. There is no longer <\/span><b><i>one look <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that represents a specific age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, celebrities will endorse and host infomercials talking about anti-aging products that give them \u201cconfidence in my body and certainly my skin\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crepeerase.com\/?src=lf_full_crepeerase_deluxefg3&amp;utm_medium=paid_search&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_campaign=20165756338&amp;utm_content=149685396175&amp;utm_term=kwd-95419177687&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjw_4S3BhAAEiwA_64YhnNpF1hrJTlWZUMNRXqMjZ09V1FObNmTZyCU5h4gth-o96016pF9jhoCAHwQAvD_BwE\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jane Seymore for Crepe Erase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). They will also stand outside the US Capitol shouting to a crowd, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m in menopause, OK?\u201d and insisting that \u201cthe shame has to be taken out of menopause. We have to talk about this very normal part of our life that happens. Our doctors can\u2019t even say the word to us, let alone walk us through the journey,\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/halle-berry-menopause-8fe88d4fd3d4e81a0ddcbedb12a35e08\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halle Berry in May 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s woman has space to age as she wants to<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u2014<\/em><\/span>injectables and menopause hormone treatments are spoken of together around the coffee shop, not whispered quietly about in line for the Ladies Room. There\u2019s no one \u201cright\u201d way to be 50\u2014or any age, for that matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personally, my 50 will include creams and serums, hair color (spoiler alert, I\u2019m not naturally red), green drinks, hopefully a few more marathons and conversations with my friends about the current state of my perimenopause journey. But I can confidently say that those products and my wardrobe aren\u2019t about some quest to be perceived as young because I\u2019ll tell anyone who asks my age. And then again, maybe someday I\u2019ll want gorgeous silver hair or to wear glasses all the time, but I love that now it\u2019s up to me. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your 50 will look totally different from mine\u2014and how cool is that?!
