Sam Burns will get his second opportunity this week as he was named to the President\u2019s Cup team as a Captain\u2019s Pick by Team USA captain Jim Furyk. The Shreveport, LA native is one of 12 players that will take on 12 of the best international pros from outside of Europe when things tee off this week at the Royal Montreal Golf Club.<\/p>\n<p>Burns\u2019 selection to the team comes after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/golf\/player\/scorecards\/_\/id\/9938\/sam-burns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stellar 2024 PGA Tour campaign<\/a>. He ranks among the top of the tour in several metrics, including ranking second in total putting, and second in birdie average. He\u2019s made 18 cuts in 21 events along with finishing inside of the top-10 eight times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam is a great player who has consistently put himself on leaderboards over the last four years,\u201d said Furyk on selecting Burns. \u201cHe has proven to excel in match play competition and demonstrates an unwavering level of passion and determination on the course, which will be a great asset for our team in Montreal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the start of the 15th playing of the 2024 President\u2019s Cup in Montreal, the five-time tour winner caught up with M + F to discuss being selected to represent his country, how his thoughts on nutrition have evolved the deeper he\u2019s gotten in his career and why he\u2019ll always make room for some hometown cooking.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption \">\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:55.36519386835%;\" class=\"ratio-based-placeholder\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.muscleandfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Professional-Golfer-Sam-Burns-strategizing-with-his-caddy-on-a-golf-shot-.jpg?quality=86&amp;strip=all\" srcset=\"\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" alt=\"Professional Golfer Sam Burns strategizing with his caddy on a golf shot\" width=\"1109\" height=\"614\" data-fallback-img=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.muscleandfitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Professional-Golfer-Sam-Burns-strategizing-with-his-caddy-on-a-golf-shot-.jpg?quality=86&amp;strip=all\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"credit\">Amy Lemus\/NurPhoto\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Sam Burns Is Ready For a Special Week<\/h3>\n<p>For Burns and the 11 other members on the American side, the season is spent competing against one another and there isn\u2019t an ample amount of time to get to know one another. This week not only offers a chance to represent their country but also for each guy to get to know one another away from the game of golf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really a cool opportunity,\u201d Burns said. \u201cBeing a part of this group is really special. When your career is over and you\u2019re done playing, you\u2019ll remember the memories made during these types of weeks. I\u2019m really excited to get the week going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With their win in 2022, the U.S. holds a 12-1-1 record in the biennial competition and is undefeated on home soil at 8-0-0.<\/p>\n<h3>Eat Good, Play Good<\/h3>\n<p>During the season, Burns focuses on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muscleandfitness.com\/muscle-fitness-hers\/hers-nutrition\/beginners-guide-clean-eating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clean eating<\/a> and avoiding seed oils, such as canola, corn, and peanut. His wife Caroline cooks most of his meals during the season \u201cI\u2019m a big believer in the mind-body connection,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen I eat bad food, it makes me feel bad. Eating clean helps with clean energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even with clean focus being a priority for him, Burns let it be known that he won\u2019t turn his nose up to some of Louisiana\u2019s culinary staples such as crawfish and jambalaya. From repetitive swinging motions to the consistent walking of courses, it\u2019s important that each part of the body is strong so there are no imbalances. Burns takes this aspect of his preparation very seriously and it also helps give him confidence when he\u2019s competing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always go back to my practice and preparation,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cI always feel like if I prepare well, and practice hard, then I\u2019ve done everything I can to by my best.\u00a0If I go out there and things don\u2019t go well,\u00a0I can accept that and move on from that.\u00a0It\u2019s the times when I don\u2019t play well, but I\u2019ve prepared well that are more frustrating to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burns will be the first to admit that he\u2019s not a fan of cardio \u2014 \u201cI hate cardio,\u201d he said \u2014 but he understands the importance of being disciplined in his training so that his body is strong and moving properly so he can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muscleandfitness.com\/workouts\/full-body-exercises\/the-best-exercises-for-a-powerful-and-precise-golf-swing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swing the golf club efficiently<\/a>.
