{"id":10422,"date":"2024-08-21T11:39:04","date_gmt":"2024-08-21T04:39:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=10422"},"modified":"2024-08-21T11:39:04","modified_gmt":"2024-08-21T04:39:04","slug":"eating-to-lower-lpa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=10422","title":{"rendered":"Eating to Lower Lp(a)\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>What should we eat\u2014and not eat\u2014to lower the cardiovascular disease risk factor lipoprotein(a)?<\/p>\n<p>Lipoprotein A, also known as Lp(a), <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31280836\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is<\/a> an independent, genetic, and causal factor for cardiovascular disease and heart attacks. At any level of LDL cholesterol, our risk of heart attack and stroke is two- to three-fold higher when our Lp(a) is elevated. With a high enough Lp(a) level, atherosclerosis continues to progress even if we get our LDL cholesterol way down, which may help explain why so many people <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30382167\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continue<\/a> to have heart attacks and strokes even under treatment for high cholesterol. It\u2019s been suggested that \u201cit would be worthwhile to check Lp(a) levels in a patient who has suffered an event but has no traditional risk factors to explain it.\u201d What\u2019s the point of checking it, though, if there isn\u2019t much we <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23176324\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can<\/a> do about it? \u201cTo date, no drug to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30382167\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduce<\/a> circulating Lp(a) levels has been approved for clinical use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29747086\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blame<\/a> our lack of knowledge on the fact that Lp(a) is not found in typical lab animals, like rats and mice. It\u2019s only found in two places in nature: primates and hedgehogs. Hedgehogs? How strange is that? No wonder Lp(a) <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23176324\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is<\/a> \u201can enigmatic protein that has mysti\ufb01ed medical scientists ever since\u201d it was first discovered more than half a century ago. But who needs mice when you have men? The level in our bloodstream is \u201cprimarily <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31280836\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">determined<\/a>\u201d by genetics. For the longest time, Lp(a) was not thought to be significantly influenced by factors such as diet. Given its similarity to LDL, though, one might <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30014498\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assume<\/a> lifestyle changes, \u201csuch as increased physical activity or the adoption of a healthy diet,\u201d would help. \u201cHowever, the effects of these interventions on Lp(a) concentrations are so far either only marginal or lacking in evidence,\u201d but might that be because they have not <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30014498\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tried<\/a> a plant-based diet yet?<\/p>\n<p>As I discuss in my video <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/how-to-lower-lpa-with-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to Lower Lp(a) with Diet<\/a><\/strong>, when it comes to raising LDL cholesterol, we\u2019ve known for years that the trans fats <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26561633\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> in meat and dairy are just as bad as the industrially produced trans fats found in partially hydrogenated oil and junk food. But, when it comes to Lp(a), as you can see below and at 2:05 in my <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/how-to-lower-lpa-with-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>video<\/strong><\/a>, trans fats from meat and dairy <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26561632\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appear<\/a> to be even worse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-108836\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-05.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-05.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-05-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-05-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-05-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-05-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-05-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-05-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-05-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-05-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Just <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/6089540\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cutting<\/a> out meat and following a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet did not appear to help, but, as you can see below and at 2:19 in my <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/how-to-lower-lpa-with-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>video<\/strong><\/a>, when study participants were <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30014498\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">put<\/a> on a whole food, plant-based diet packed with a dozen servings of fruits and vegetables a day, their Lp(a) levels dropped by 16 percent within four weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-108838\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-19.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-19.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-19-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-19-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-19-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-19-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-19-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-19-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-19-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-19-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Of course, in those 30 days, the study subjects also lost about 15 pounds, as you can <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/how-to-lower-lpa-with-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">see<\/a> below and at 2:28, but weight loss does not appear to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1830250\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affect<\/a> Lp(a) levels, so you figure that it must have been due to the diet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-108840\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-28.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-28.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-28-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-28-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-28-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-28-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-28-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-28-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-28-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-28-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re already eating a healthy plant-based diet and your Lp(a) levels are still too high, are there any particular foods that can help? As with cholesterol, even if the average total cholesterol of those <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17364116\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eating<\/a> strictly plant-based may be right on target at less than 150, with an LDL under 70, there\u2019s a bell curve with plus or minus 30 points that fall on either side, as you can see below and at 2:45 in my <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/how-to-lower-lpa-with-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-108842 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-45-e1721753158158.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-45-e1721753158158.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-45-e1721753158158-960x290.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-45-e1721753158158-1024x309.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-45-e1721753158158-768x232.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-45-e1721753158158-1536x464.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-45-e1721753158158-1200x363.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-45-e1721753158158-720x218.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/2-45-e1721753158158-540x163.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29807048\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enter<\/a> the \u201cPortfolio Diet,\u201d which is not only plant-based, but also adds specific cholesterol-lowing foods\u2014so, think nuts, beans, oatmeal, and berries to drag cholesterol down even further. Nuts have been <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12221048\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">put<\/a> to the test. Two and a half ounces of almonds every day dropped levels, but only by about 8 percent. That is better than another nut study, though, that <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21421296\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> no effect at all, as you can see below and at 3:29 in my <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/how-to-lower-lpa-with-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a><\/strong>. An additional study <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21114415\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> \u201cno significant changes,\u201d and researchers reported that subjects in their study \u201cdid not <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25670361\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">experience<\/a> a change in Lp(a).\u201d Ah, nuts. <\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-108846\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/3-29.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/3-29.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/3-29-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/3-29-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/3-29-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/3-29-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/3-29-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/3-29-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/3-29-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/08\/3-29-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">There is one plant that appears to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2210803314000633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drop<\/a> Lp(a) levels by 20 percent, which is enough to take people exceeding the U.S. cut-off down to a more optimum level. And that plant is a fruit: <em>Emblica officinalis<\/em>, otherwise known as amla or Indian gooseberry. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study asked smokers before and after the trial about their \u201cmouth hygiene, cough with expectoration, shortness of breath on exertion, loss of appetite, feelings of impending doom, palpitation, sleep deprivation, irritability, heartburn and tiredness,\u201d as well as such objective measurements as their blood count, cholesterol, DNA damage, antioxidant status, and lung function. The amla extract used \u201cshowed a significant improvement compared to the placebo group in all the subjective and objective parameters tested with no reports of adverse events.\u201d No side effects at all. That\u2019s unbelievable! No, that\u2019s unbelievable. And indeed, it\u2019s completely not true. <\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yes, subjective complaints got better in the amla group, but they got better in the placebo group, too, with arbitrary scoring systems and no statistical analysis whatsoever. And, of the two dozen objective measures, only half could be said to reach any kind of before-and-after statistical significance and only three were significant enough to account for the fact that if you measure two dozen things, a few might pop up as positive if only by chance. Any time you see this kind of spin in the abstract, which is sometimes the only part of a study people read, you should suspect some kind of conflict of interest. However, no conflicts of interest were declared by the researchers, but that\u2019s bullsh*t, as the study was funded by the very company selling those amla supplements! Sigh.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, one of those three significant findings was the Lp(a), so it might be worth a try in the context of a plant-based diet, which, in addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29575002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">helping<\/a> with weight loss, can dramatically improve blood pressure (even after cutting down on blood pressure medications) and contribute to a 25-point drop in LDL cholesterol. Also, it may <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30014498\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contribute<\/a> to a 30 percent drop in C-reactive protein and significant reductions in other inflammatory markers for \u201ca systemic, cardio-protective effect\u201d\u2014all thanks to this single dietary approach.<\/p>\n<p>You may be interested in my video on <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/trans-fat-in-meat-and-dairy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Trans Fat in Meat and Dairy<\/strong><\/a>.
