{"id":10122,"date":"2024-04-02T19:31:09","date_gmt":"2024-04-02T12:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=10122"},"modified":"2024-04-02T19:31:09","modified_gmt":"2024-04-02T12:31:09","slug":"skip-breakfast-to-lose-weight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=10122","title":{"rendered":"Skip Breakfast to Lose Weight?\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Breakthroughs in the field of chronobiology\u2014the study of our circadian rhythms\u2014help solve the mystery of the missing morning calories in breakfast studies.<\/p>\n<p>Where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27292940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">did<\/a> this whole \u201cbreakfast is the most important meal of the day\u201d concept come from? \u201cThe Father of Public Relations,\u201d Edward Bernays, infamous for his \u201cTorches of Freedom\u201d campaign to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/08821127.2015.1064681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">get<\/a> women to start smoking back in the 1920s, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/blog\/the-secular-shepherd\/201604\/edward-bernays-uncle-freud-and-betty-crocker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paid<\/a> by a bacon company to popularize the emblematic bacon-and-eggs breakfast. The role of public relations, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17558787\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in his book <em>Propaganda<\/em>, is the \u201cconscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses\u2026.\u201d Public relations specialists thereby \u201cconstitute an invisible government, which is the true ruling power of our country\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Breakfast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24965309\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is<\/a> big business. Powerful corporate interests, such as the cereal lobby, are blamed for \u201cperpetuating myths such as the value of consuming breakfast.\u201d An editorial in <em>The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition<\/em> urged nutrition scientists to speak truth to power and challenge conventional wisdom when necessary \u201ceven when it looks like we are taking away motherhood and apple pie.\u201d \u201cActually,\u201d the editorial concludes, \u201creducing the portion size of apple pie might not be a bad idea, either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, should we \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24918099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">break<\/a> the feast\u201d and skip breakfast to lose weight? As I discuss in my video <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/is-skipping-breakfast-better-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Is Skipping Breakfast Better for Weight Loss?<\/a><\/strong>, though \u201cthe advice to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26269370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eliminate<\/a> breakfast will surely pit\u2026nutritional scientists\u2026against the very strong and powerful food industry,\u201d skipping breakfast has been described as \u201ca straightforward and feasible strategy to reduce total daily energy [caloric] intake.\u201d Unfortunately, it doesn\u2019t seem to work.<\/p>\n<p>Most randomized controlled studies of breakfast skipping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27519140\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> no weight-loss benefit to omitting breakfast. How is that possible if skipping breakfast means skipping calories? The Bath Breakfast Project, a famous series of experiments run not out of a tub, but the University of Bath in the UK, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27292940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discovered<\/a> a key to the mystery. Men and women were randomized to either eat breakfast (defined as taking in at least 700 calories before 11:00 am) or fast until noon every day. As you can see in the graph below and at 2:15 in my <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/is-skipping-breakfast-better-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>video<\/strong><\/a>, as in other similar trials, the breakfast-eating group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24898233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ate<\/a> a little less throughout the rest of the day but still ended up with hundreds of excess daily calories over the breakfast skippers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-103452\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-15.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-15.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-15-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-15-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-15-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-15-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-15-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-15-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-15-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-15-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Those who ate breakfast consumed more than 500 more calories a day. Over six weeks, that would add up to more than 20,000 extra calories. Yet, after six weeks, both groups ended up with the same change in body fat, as you can see below and at 2:36 in my<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24898233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a><\/strong>. How could tens of thousands of calories just effectively disappear?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-103458\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-36.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-36.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-36-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-36-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-36-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-36-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-36-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-36-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-36-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-36-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If more calories were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24898233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">going<\/a> in with no change in weight, then there must have been more calories going out. And, indeed, as you can see in the graph below at 2:52 and in my <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/is-skipping-breakfast-better-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>video<\/strong><\/a>, the breakfast group was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24898233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> to spontaneously engage in more light-intensity physical activity in the mornings than the breakfast-skipping group. Light-intensity activities include things like casual walking or light housecleaning, not structured exercise per se, but apparently, enough extra activity to use up the bulk of those excess breakfast calories. There\u2019s a popular misconception that our body goes into energy conservation mode when we skip breakfast by slowing our metabolic rate. However, that does not appear to be true. But, maybe our body does intuitively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27292940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slow<\/a> us down in other ways. When we skip breakfast, our bodies just don\u2019t seem to want to move around as much.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-103476\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-52-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-52-1.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-52-1-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-52-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-52-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-52-1-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-52-1-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-52-1-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-52-1-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/2-52-1-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The extra activity didn\u2019t completely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24898233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make<\/a> up for the added calories consumed by the breakfast group, though. We seem to still be missing about a hundred daily calories, suggesting there may be another factor to account for the mystery of the MIA morning calories. Recent breakthroughs in the field of chronobiology\u2014the study of our body\u2019s natural rhythms\u2014have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29861661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unsettled<\/a> an even more sacred cow of nutrition dogma: the concept that a calorie is a calorie. It\u2019s not just what we eat, but when we eat. Same number of calories, different weight loss, depending on meal timing. <\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just to give you a taste: As you can see in the graph below and at 4:11 in my <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/is-skipping-breakfast-better-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>video<\/strong><\/a>, the exact same number of calories at breakfast are significantly less fattening than the same number of calories eaten at supper. Mind-blowing!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-103478\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/4-11.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/4-11.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/4-11-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/4-11-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/4-11-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/4-11-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/4-11-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/4-11-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/4-11-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/4-11-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A diet with a bigger breakfast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23512957\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">causes<\/a> more weight loss than the same diet with a bigger dinner, as shown below and at 4:23 in my <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/is-skipping-breakfast-better-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>video<\/strong><\/a>. Because of our circadian rhythms, morning calories don\u2019t appear to count as much as evening calories.
