Calculate yours using the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nal.usda.gov\/human-nutrition-and-food-safety\/dri-calculator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommended daily nutrient calculator<\/a>, and consider these fantastic vegan protein sources:<\/p>\n<h2>2. Andrews<\/a>, MS, MA, RD, author of A Guide to Plant-Based Eating. \u201cHowever, it\u2019s non-heme iron, and absorption of non-heme irons varies substantially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The differences in bioavailability of heme and non-heme iron may explain why <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/339309\/SACN_Iron_and_Health_Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">several studies<\/a>\u00a0found sufficient but\u00a0significantly lower iron levels in non-meat eaters.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>To adjust for this difference, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Iron-HealthProfessional\/#h2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>\u00a0recommends that vegetarians consume 1.8 times more iron than people who eat meat. You can hit your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/read\/10026\/chapter\/11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommended dietary allowance<\/a> (18 mg) through these great non-heme iron sources:<\/p>\n<p>Iron deficiencies are uncommon in the U.S., but Andrews says they are \u201cmore typical in pre-menopausal women and anyone who donates blood regularly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He cautions against supplementing your iron intake without knowing your blood levels. \u201cHaving too much iron in the body is also a situation to avoid,\u201d Andrews adds.<\/p>\n<h2>3. All Vegan Food Is Healthy<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-167348\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/07105830\/vegan-facts-600-oreos.jpg\" alt=\"Close-Up Images of Oreos Isolated | Vegan Facts\" width=\"602\" height=\"399\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong data-redactor-tag=\"strong\">Fact:\u00a0<\/strong>Just because a food doesn\u2019t contain animal products <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/is-vegan-food-healthy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s good for you<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, Oreos and Lay\u2019s Potato Chips are vegan, but in order to maintain a well-balanced diet, Maguire recommends foregoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/ultra-processed-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">processed food<\/a>. \u201cThe closer the ingredient is to its original form, the better,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>A truly plant-based approach to eating does offer a variety of health benefits \u2014 in general, vegetarian diets are associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12833118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lower BMIs<\/a>\u00a0and better overall heart health.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19562864\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Dietetic Association<\/a>\u00a0further asserts that well-planned vegan and vegetarian diets \u201cmay provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4628270\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a>\u00a0after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5598028\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a> encourages vegans to watch their nutrient intake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlant-based foods vary in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/amino-acids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amino acid<\/a> profile,\u201d notes Maguire, \u201cso eating food combinations like rice and beans or peanut butter on toast ensures your total daily intake consists of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/complementary-proteins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complementary amino acids<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>4. The optimism of this myth is encouraging, but there\u2019s no single answer to solving climate change.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/josephpoore.com\/Science%20360%206392%20987%20-%20Accepted%20Manuscript.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">comprehensive review<\/a>\u00a0of farming\u2019s environmental impacts, however, found even the \u201clowest-impact animal products typically exceed those of vegetable substitutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Generally, the review found that animal-related products occupy roughly 83 percent of the world\u2019s farmland despite providing just 18 percent of its overall calories. So even just reducing your meat consumption, especially beef, can help lower your carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<p>Andrews agrees that \u201c100 percent plant-based eating generally results in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/our-work\/nutrition-physical-activity\/dietary-guidelines\/previous-dietary-guidelines\/2015\/advisory-report\/appendix-e-2\/appendix-e-237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lighter overall environmental footprint<\/a>.\u201d Additionally, he says, \u201cit can support the wellbeing of animals, support more humane working conditions for farm laborers, and decrease the odds of developing the most common non-communicable diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So while veganism may not solve all of the world\u2019s problems, it just might make it a nicer place for the creatures who live here. Including you!<\/p>\n<h2>5. No one diet is for everyone, and no one diet is necessarily superior to another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe interaction between food and the human body,\u201d he continues, \u201cis profoundly complex. So it\u2019s really tough to say that one way of eating will be nutritionally sound for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Basically, people just have to adjust their eating to their bodies, their environment, and their ethical needs. Are strict vegans disciplined? Yes! Are they \u201cbetter\u201d than you? Nah.
